Since the launch of its streaming service, Netflix traffic became a significant portion of the total traffic and a leader in providing streaming video services in North America (see "Does Netflix Replace P2P File Sharing?" - here) and also ignited the conflict between network operators (Comcast) and content distribution service providers (Level3, in the case of Netflix - see here and here).

The chart on the right compares Youtube traffic to Netflix, in Canada, just after the service was introduced in Canada.

Now, PeerApp announces " .. support for transparently caching the over-the-top (OTT) video rentals of Netflix. ..  PeerApp is the industry's first transparent caching solution to support adaptive bit rate technologies like Netflix, which currently accounts for 20% to 40% of peak operator traffic in the US."

Charlie Baker (picture), PeerApp's Director of Product Management said "... Transparent caching allows operators to reduce the impact of unmanaged content by caching it as close to the subscriber as possible. Cost savings are realized in both Internet bandwidth and network infrastructure upgrades. The latest UltraBand software is providing immediate benefits to our North American customers and is ready for world-wide deployment as Netflix expansion continues."

As PeerApp also OEMs its UltraBand technology to other vendors (Alcatel-Lucent, Allot, BTI - here) we may see this also on their respective products.
